A shopper has one question before they buy: Will this arrive before Friday? Can I pay cash on delivery? Is this color still available?
If the answer is buried behind a contact form, some shoppers will leave. On Wix, a WhatsApp button gives them a faster route. They tap once, WhatsApp opens, and the question lands in a channel they already use.
There are three sensible ways to add WhatsApp to a Wix website. The right one depends on how much you need the button to do.
Start with the simplest version
If you only need visitors to message one WhatsApp number, use a click-to-chat link. This is the fastest setup because it does not require a new app or a custom integration.
The link format is:
https://api.whatsapp.com/send?phone=YOURNUMBER
Replace YOURNUMBER with your full phone number in international format. Do not include spaces, brackets, dashes, or a leading zero. For example, a US number might look like this:
https://api.whatsapp.com/send?phone=12125558471
You can also add a prefilled message:
The %20 pieces create spaces in the message. Keep the text short. The customer can edit it before sending, so the prefill should help them start, not force them into a script.
Add the link to a Wix button
In the Wix editor, add a button where shoppers naturally need help. Product pages, the cart page, delivery information pages, and the contact page are usually better choices than the footer alone.
Set the button text to something specific:
- Ask on WhatsApp
- Check delivery on WhatsApp
- Confirm COD on WhatsApp
- Message us about this item
Then open the button link settings, choose a web address, and paste your WhatsApp URL. Preview the site on desktop and mobile before publishing. On desktop, the link should open WhatsApp Web or the desktop app. On mobile, it should open the WhatsApp app.
This setup works well for stores where WhatsApp is mostly a pre-purchase support channel. It is also a good first step if you are not sure how many shoppers will use WhatsApp yet.
Use the mobile Quick Action Bar
Wix also supports WhatsApp in the mobile Quick Action Bar. This is useful because many WhatsApp conversations start from phones, and mobile shoppers should not have to scroll back to a contact section.
Add the Quick Action Bar to the mobile version of your site, open the quick action settings, choose WhatsApp, and enter your number. Then check the mobile preview. The action should be visible without covering important buttons like add to cart, checkout, or coupon fields.
For stores in COD-heavy markets, the mobile placement matters. A shopper may want to ask whether COD is available for their area, whether a transfer receipt is enough to reserve an item, or whether delivery can be arranged around a work schedule. The easier it is to ask, the less pressure you put on the product page to answer every edge case.
Write the first message for the customer
A prefilled message saves back-and-forth when the shopper starts from a specific page. It can also help you sort conversations when the same WhatsApp number handles sales and support.
Good prefilled messages are plain:
- Hi, I have a question about this product.
- Hi, is cash on delivery available for my area?
- Hi, I want to confirm delivery before ordering.
- Hi, I need help choosing the right size.
Avoid long messages that ask for too much at once. A customer who taps WhatsApp is usually trying to move quickly. If the prefill looks like a form, they may delete it or abandon the chat.
If you add different buttons to different pages, use different messages. A product page message can mention the product. A delivery page message can mention shipping or COD. A cart page message can mention checkout help.
Decide when a button is not enough
A Wix WhatsApp button is good for starting conversations. It does not, by itself, manage the work that happens after the message arrives.
You may need more than a button if:
- Several people reply from the same business.
- You need to separate sales questions from order support.
- You want order updates or abandoned cart follow-ups.
- You need a cleaner record of COD confirmations.
- You often lose chats because the customer writes after hours.
In those cases, look at a WhatsApp app or automation tool instead of adding more buttons around the site. The button solves discovery. Automation solves timing and follow-up.
For example, a store that receives many COD orders may want shoppers to confirm the order after checkout, not only ask questions before checkout. Transfer-heavy stores may also need a way to nudge customers who started payment but did not send proof. That is a different job from a simple chat link.
Lume handles WhatsApp automation for ecommerce stores where order confirmations, abandoned carts, and payment follow-ups need to happen without manual chasing. You can learn more at golume.app.
Keep the button useful after launch
Once the WhatsApp link is live, test it like a customer.
Open a product page on your phone. Tap the button. Send the prefilled message. Check which phone receives it, how the message appears, and whether the person replying has enough context to answer quickly.
Then look at placement. If the button appears only on the contact page, it will mostly catch shoppers who already decided to ask for help. If it appears near product details, delivery notes, and checkout friction, it can catch questions before they become exits.
Do not put WhatsApp everywhere by default. Too many buttons can make the site feel noisy. Start with the pages where a question blocks the order, then add more only when real conversations show a need.
Common mistakes to avoid
The first mistake is using the wrong phone format. WhatsApp links need the international number without punctuation. Test the exact link after adding it to Wix.
The second mistake is using vague button text. Contact us is easy to ignore. Ask on WhatsApp tells the shopper what will happen.
The third mistake is sending every visitor into the same conversation with no context. A short prefilled message can tell you whether the shopper came from a product page, delivery page, or checkout page.
The fourth mistake is treating WhatsApp as a place for instant replies when nobody is assigned to it. If your store can only answer during business hours, say that near the button or set up a reply process that does not leave shoppers guessing.
Adding WhatsApp to Wix is a small change, but it works best when it is placed near the moment of hesitation: product fit, delivery timing, COD availability, transfer proof, or checkout help.
